Huon pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) - 4x tubestock

$45.00

4x tube-stock grown seedlings between 10 and 15cm in height and 2 years old. A rare and very long lived conifer native to south and south western Tasmania, renowned for its valuable. light and highly fragrant timber valued at over $20,000 per cubic metre. The wood has a very high oil content of methyl eugenol, which offers the timber waterproof properties and very strong rot resistance, as well as deterring insects.

Distinctive for its drooping top and hanging needles, they make an attractive garden feature growing slowly into a shurbby tree over a few decades, and into a larger tree in the long term. Widely known as slow growing; given good sun, soil and ample water Huon pines can actually grow up to 30cm per year in height once established. This species is very resistant to pests due to the high oil content of the wood and will grow well in temporarily waterlogged soil as well as well drained spots. Tolerant to frosts down to at least -7 degrees Celsius and up to 35, the tree does best in a partly shaded position. For larger plantings or timber production, cover trees such as eucalypts should be planted until the huons are well established, whereupon the cover trees can be harvested/removed.
