Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) - Seedlings - box of 40
Huon pine seedlings between 10 and 20cm in height grown to a suitable size for transplanting for at least 2 years. A rare and very long lived conifer native to south and south western Tasmania, renowned for its valuable. light and highly fragrant timber valued at over $20,000 per cubic metre. Distinctive for its drooping top and hanging needles, they make an attractive garden feature. Widely known as a slow growing tree; given good sun, soil and ample water Huon pines can actually grow up to 30cm per year in height. This species is very resistant to pests due to the high oil content of the wood and will grow well in temporarily waterlogged soil as well as well drained spots. Tolerant to frosts down to at least -7 degrees Celsius and up to 35, the tree does best in a partly shaded position. For larger plantings or timber production, cover trees such as eucalypts should be planted until the huons are well established, whereupon the cover trees can be harvested/removed.
