Coast redwood (Sequoia) seeds - 2024 Harvest
2g or 400-500+ seeds of the giant redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) seeds, harvested locally from an old plantation trial in the blue mountains. Moderate to fast growing trees reaching towering heights developing the characteristic thick, fire-proof red bark and strong, straight stems with age. Thrive on rich, well drained soils and moist conditions but are adaptable to most cool coastal or highland Australian environments.
Sequoia seeds benefit from a light and short cold stratification period and very shallow sowing. Seeds are tiny and should not be buried too deep. The plants are hardy and fast growing, tolerating wetter sites than many other conifers. Ensure they are grown with ample water in hot and dry times and ideally plant on a light slope and/or well drained soil. Sequoia seeds decline quickly in storage and should be sown quickly, or kept in a sealed package in the fridge for no longer than 1-2 years
