Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) - Potted trees
Coast redwoods are a relatively fast growing tree and can live for over 1000 years. Native to the west coast of the U.S. and reaching to the heavens as they mature, they are amongst the tallest trees in the world. The current world record holding tree is a coast sequoia known as Hyperion, with a height of 116m. This tree has fire-resistant bark when mature and can re-sprout from the trunk after fire.
This species grows well on a range of soils and is adapted to handle periodic waterlogging or flooding well. The trees grow tallest in places with regular fog events and high rainfall. Coast redwoods prefer moist sites with 1000mm of rain or more per year, however they will also grow in drier area, though shorter and denser.
