Deodar (Himalayan) Cedars (Cedrus deodara) - Potted trees
Deodar (Himalayan) Cedars (Cedrus deodara) - Potted trees
The Deodar cedar is a fast growing and resilient conifer native to medium altitudes in the himalayas. It grows in a roughly conical shape at first, eventually fanning out to form a layered and dense crown sometimes with slightly drooping branches. This tree tolerates even poor sandy or rocky soils and is moderately drought tolerant. The cones sit upright on the branches and look like large green eggs when immature, eventually maturing to reddish brown and disintegrating to release the seeds. Many parks and gardens in rural NSW and Victoria feature these trees which can reach over 40m at maturity with trunks 1m or more in diameter. A good landscape or feature tree which can be used as a windbreak or for stock shelter.
