The Douglas fir is a beautiful Christmas tree with soft needles that are dark green to blue-green in colour. It is widely regarded for its symmetrical shape and mild, citrus-like scent. The species also has great needle retention and the branches are strong enough to support lots of decorations.

 

Origin and climate

The Douglas fir originates in the western Canada and United States. Two variants exists, one found on the coast of the Pacific ocean (variant Menziensii) and the other in the Rocky mountains (variant Glauca).

It naturally occurs from sea level up to elevations of 2000m.

 

Growth

Height: Up to 60cm each year in optimal growing conditions. 5 to 6 years to reach a size of 6 foot (180cm) Christmas trees. mature trees reaching over 30 meters.

Ideal Growth Conditions: neutral to acidic soil pH. Moist but well-drained soils, full sunlight or partial shade.

Attributes: Upright branches forming a loose conical shape. deep green needles. New growth is light green, soft and delicate.

The Douglas Fir has its origins in the US west coast and all the way up to the Rocky mountains. It is a renowned variety with stately elegance, a sweet citrus-like fragrance and tight layers of symmetrical branches tipped with light green buds that often open up on display in your warm home into tiny bright green new needles. Rocking a great shape, rich green colour and needles soft to the touch that stay firmly attached through the display period, this beautiful tree will turn your christmas guests green with envy.
